There is much to commend in these performances and, along with the first installment, we have a set of the Schumann symphonies that is a winner no matter how one slices it. Recommended.

Schumann's symphonies (...) The sheer power that lies in the scores can be experienced in this recording with the symphony orchestra from Stavanger in southwestern Norway. Jan Willem de Vriend starts an offshore expedition, so to speak, and finds a musical source that flows and flows (...) The fourth movement also gets down to business: (...) menacing fjord rocks open up. Nothing goes against the grain here, but simply played without the patina of the repertoire and tradition. No. 4 also impresses in this way and receives a fresh cell treatment. Very present, clearly audible and pleasantly spatial in sound (...) absolutely worth listening to!

String sizing and good mixing work also ensure special attention for the woodwind and brass voices, which emerge with balance even where Schumann's orchestration would pose some basic imbalances.

It's especially good to hear the focused tone and tight rhythm in the timpani, the clean sound of the wind and brass, and the careful use of vibrato in the strings.

Schumann is rarely just carefree or depressed in these two symphonies, but all degrees in between those extremes are well hit. Set this edition quickly next to that with the First and Second Symphony for completion.

Herewith, we present the second and final instalment in Jan de Vriend's survey of Robert Schumann's symphonies. This volume includes symphonies nos. 3 and 4. The first volume was unanimously acclaimed by critics and audience.
Jan de Vriend conducts the wonderful Stavanger Symphony Orchestra and they both enjoy the fantastic acoustic of the Fartein Valen hall, considered one of the best in the world.
