The Complete Symphonies (4 CD-set)
Franz Schubert
Residentie Orkest The Hague
Jan Willem de Vriend (conductor)

The only unqualified success here is Symphony No. 1, the earliest recording. The introduction here is very martial. De Vriend's use of minimal to no vibrato makes the harmonies clear and effective, especially intervals of a second. The exposition is crisp and clear. Even when playing forte, the strings are deeply expressive. The winds use no vibrato and produce a true tone without sounding like they're blowing on Coke bottles. The Andante is an easily rocking 6/8 gait that waxes and wanes naturally with small retards. The Menuetto is a playful hop-to-it. And the finale sails right along with the second violins giving a clear rhythmic nudge to the first violins' even rhythms.

...fleet, keenly animated readings... ... a fiery, full-bodied Great C major...

The dark colors of the Batavian orchestra ("Unfinished"), the stormy climate always in ambush are fascinating from start to finish - Symphonies Nos. 3 and 4 are particularly successful - and give great unity to this cycle.

Clearly a worthwhile discovery where you don't necessarily expect it. This applies especially to de Vriend's interpretation of Schubert's early symphonies.
